Here’s a post for all of those who are not familiar with blogs (short for web logs) or “just don't get them”. Some of you will know about these already, but for those who don’t, this is for you. I'm posting this as a member news post and member blogs post as it applies to both of them.
Before you ignore this altogether, or decide that these things aren’t for you, please have a look at this excellent video on the Common Craft website by Lee LeFever, who explains Blogs in Plain English (it's also available on YouTube).
Lee describes the background of blogs and some motivations for getting writing. Why am I mentioning this? It’s because if you are a member of the SBA, we have made it easy for you to write your own blog on this website.
We have provided you with a system that allows you to easily add two categories of posts. You can add member news and member blogs posts.
A member news post is for publicising events you are involved in or to mention things that you think others mat be interested in.
A member blog post is more like a news story about what you’re up to.
Both of these can be added as easily as the Blogs in Plain English video shows. All you need to do is log in to the site, type your title and the text of your post, attach an image if you want, then click the submit button.
If you just don’t get it and are maybe thinking “Where do people find the time?”, then I'd like to recommend that you watch the short talk given by Clay Shirky at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco in 2008.
Stick with it - it has geeky moments, but it’s very insightful. If you don't or can’t do video, there’s a (lightly edited) transcript on his website on the Gin, Television, and Social Surplus page.
