The evening will begin at 6pm in the school playground opposite the Methodist Church Hall where the boys and girls from Luckwell Primary School Dance Club will showcase their Morris and May Pole dancing skills. Their teacher is Julia Christmas. At the end of their dances the children will lead the way from the playground, across the home zone and into the main hall where the audience will be invited to take their seats for the rest of the performance.
To begin Bristol School of Dance will present a host of 'baby ballerinas' all aged between two and a half and four years. (At the end of their performance they will filter back into the audience to sit on their parent's lap.) Four ballet groups from pre-primary and primary dance classes will follow on from the little ones. Anna Gibby who is now studying grade two in her ballet class will present a solo performance Their teacher is Amy Hobday from Bristol School of Dance Tel: 0117 973 7932. Frances Bhoola will accompany the dancers on the piano.
Ballet is followed by Middle Eastern Dance. This community group will offer two short pieces - first a classical Persian dance accompanied by musician Amir Vakilzadeh on a stringed instrument called a Tar. Their second dance is to an Egyptian drum solo. Their teacher is Medea Madhavi who runs classes in Southville. Tel: 0117 963 3029. (Medea will be dancing a solo in the second half of the evening.)
Luckwell Dance Club will return, but this time on stage, to present English Country Dancing. Their teacher is Julia Christmas.
Ending the first half of the performance will be a contemporary dance duet by Nico Thoemmes and his partner Jess who are both studying for their HND qualification of dance at The City of Bristol College.
The interval is estimated to begin just after 7pm and will last for half an hour. Light refreshments will be served in the side hall. During the interval you are invited to re-visit the Southville School playground to listen and watch the Rag Morris dancers and musicians. They will lead us all back into the main hall for the start of the second half of the performance at approximately 7.40pm. The second half of the evening begins with an exuberant display of Egyptian dance from members of the long established dance classes run by Jacqueline Jamal which are held at the Southville Centre. Jacqueline Jamal, who is so well known in Bristol, also teachers and performs internationally. Tel: 0117 9380742
Ashton Park Secondary School which now has status as a Specialist Sports College will present us with two group dances by their Dance Club. They recently performed at Stages in February and were very well received. Their dance teacher is Janine Mulroy.
Physical Jerks are the renowned Welsh Break Dance champions. Four of their group, who live in Bristol, will perform their amazing bboy skills on stage with their new choreographed show. Check out their web page for video clips of their past performances at www.physicaljerks.co.uk
A change of mood and a solo performance of traditional Persian dance by teacher, choreographer and world wide performer Medea Madhavi. She is accompanied on stage by musician Amir Vakilzaden playing the classical Iranian Tar.
The evening will be brought to a dynamic close by Salsa dance partners Jess Newton and Louise Forster. They will be accompanied by dancers from the DanceQuarter and you might even have the chance to dance in the isles yourself.
